I went to Uppark to see the dollhouse, without any knowledge whatsoever of the history of the place. It was absolutely astonishing in many ways– from the recent history of fire and reconstruction, through an examination of the class system, the true story of the dairy maid who inherited the estate, the connection to Emma Hamilton, the tunnels that inspired HG Wells… this was a most unexpected day out.
